La performance s’inspire de la figure du preneur d’images imaginée par Fernand Deligny. A partir d’archives personnelles glanées au fil du temps et de quelques images de chevets (tirées des films Le Miroir, Stalker, Le Tempestaire ou encore Les Yeux sans visage), Les Veilleurs d’images déroule une série de sept poèmes visuels dédiés à l’infinitif camérer :

Alors camérer ? Ca serait profiter de cette chambre à moudre pour bigler un peu vers autre chose que le cours même des événements qui sont ce qu’ils sont, étant vécus par des hommes, vécus c’est beaucoup dire, quoi qu’on en dise quand il s’agit d’un film de fiction. Autre chose ? Ces choses qui touchent, qui font émoi, on ne sait pas pourquoi. Elles échappent à l’histoire, avec ou sans majuscule, mais, sans elles, l’histoire ne serait pas ce qu’elle est. C’est un bien joli verbe que bigler. Il y aurait comme deux oculare, deux oculaires, et non pas pour voir en relief, deux oculaires, comme il y a deux mémoires, si bien que le on qui tourne aurait comme un œil qui traine en quête de ce qu’il pourrait bien y avoir de simplement humain, ne serait-ce que des bribes, outre et par-delà la scène scénariée. Les Veilleurs d’Images (the image watchers) is a multimedia performance following on from the show You Sared Me (groupe Composit, 2014)

The idea behind Les Veilleurs d’Images is to create a narrative detached from the first show and focusing on the character of the man with the movie camera. Combining images created for the show with others gleaned over time, this multimedia performance concentrates on the person behind the camera and on his bank of images.

“Shooting, what’s it about? Taking advantage of this milling chamber to get a little squint at that something else, beyond the actual flow of events which are what they are, being lived out by people. ‘Lived’ is saying a lot, whatever anyone says, when we’re talking about a fictional film. ‘Something else’? Things which touch you, move you, we don’t know why. They aren’t included in the story, or History with a capital H, but without them the story wouldn’t be what it is. ‘Squint’, what a pretty word, as if there were two eyes, double eyepieces, not for seeing in relief but two eyes like there are two memories, so that the one filming would have as it were a trailing eye looking out for anything there, even just a snippet, which is simply human, beyond and above the scripted scene. We ought to invent the squinting camera.”
